Most candidates start with advanced degrees in STEM — engineering, physics, biology, medicine, or computer science — plus years of professional experience. Pilots, researchers, and physicians often make strong applicants because they already work under pressure and master complex systems.

Physical training is just as intense. Astronauts prepare for microgravity, high G-forces, survival scenarios, and long stretches away from Earth. They practice spacewalks underwater, learn to operate spacecraft systems, and train for medical emergencies in flight.
